new barn dogs

Last year we attempted to get some livestock guardian dogs and it was a miserable bust. We will attempt again this year with hopes that the last attempt was the dogs' fault and not ours.

We were told she was sold to us with pig. This means pregnant. We bought her the beginning of April. The former owner told me if she took she would be due mid July.

Not taking this decision lightly for it is a shit-ton of money. But, with the rebates and low interest clean energy loans out there, we might be at just the right time to pull the trigger.

this years garden

All the plans and dreams of a bigger better garden from last year came crashing down last week. My over worked, underpaid carpal tunnel ridden hands gave up the ghost. KAPUT!

The good news is I have all the time in the world. The bad news I only have use of my left hand and even then its strength is lacking greatly.

Yesterday the tomatoes went in. 24 plants. Last year we had 18 plants. Last years garden was half destroyed by the pigs. This year we have the pigs better controlled. I am also hoping by the fall to have the garden mostly fenced. The problem with plans; goals, dreams, is it takes money.

I have about 100$ worth of seeds that need to go in the ground. The ground is only partially ready. I was in the middle of digging, tilling, mixing in compost. The littles have been helping but there reluctance and arguments get old.

I am determined to have a garden at least as good as last years. I may get it in more slowly but I hope the final result will not be less because of it.

Our projects

Maui and Muana

A present given to us by the barn only a month after moving in. We instantly fell in love with these two.

Barn Cats

A new Normal

Life was strange the first year on the farm. Transitions for everybody took longer than expected. Here are some highlights from our first year.

The Animals

Our animals are one of the greatest thing we have done around here. They teach us new things every day. They make us laugh. They keep us going everyday.

Self Sustainability

One of the goals we have in mind when taking on this new life is becoming more self sustainable. Here is some of the projects that we are doing to bring that together and make it a reality.
